How does it work?
Once you have purchased your Amtrak USA Rail Pass online in advance, you have one year to exchange it for paper tickets and begin your journey. Once you are issued a paper USA Rail Pass, you have 330 days to complete your journey.
Your Amtrak USA Rail Pass is not a ticket. When traveling on a USA Rail Pass, you must have a ticket and reservation for each train you board. You must make a reservation and pick up your ticket before boarding a train. Once your first leg of travel is reserved, you must complete your journey within the selected travel period of the Pass. This begins on the first date of travel.
You can pick up your pass and tickets at any Amtrak ticket counter in many Amtrak stations by showing your USA Rail Pass or pass confirmation number. Passes can only be picked up at staffed stations.
On some trains, you may be able to change your reservation to business class or sleeping car accommodations. Reservations are required for travel on most trains. We recommend that you make reservations before you arrive in the U.S. and as far in advance as possible because if you wait too long, it is more likely that seats assigned to the USA Rail Pass will not be available on the train you want to travel on.
Good to know
On Amtrak, a segment (also known as section or leg) of a trip begins when you board a vehicle (train, bus, ferry, or other participating transportation) and ends when you disembark, regardless of the length of the trip.
Here is an example to better understand how the segments work:
To travel from A to B, you could take the train directly to B and use a segment, or you could take the train to C (segment 1) and then take another train from C to B (segment 2). Both ways get you to B, but you use a different number of your available segments.
